The Sacred Child of Atocha, also known as Nino de Atocha and Holy Infant of Atocha is revered in Spain and the New World for performing miracles and helping the helpless. He is depicted as a young male pilgrim wearing a brimmed hat and cape, holding a basket of roses or food and a staff. He is the patron of pilgrims and has been worshipped since the 1200s, when Spanish King Alphonse the Wise revealed his devotion to Our Lady of Atocha. This devotion stems from a legend about the Child bringing food to prisoners of faith as he roamed the land. Nino de Atocha became a symbol for Spain during the expulsion of the Moors and Spanish explorers brought his statues to the New World. St Nino de Atocha is recognized as the Patron Saint for Pilgrims Mexico, Travelers, Prisoners, and Protection from Danger. His memorial feast day is celebrated in 25th of December.
