Saint Paula

Saint Paula, born in AD 347 in Rome, is recognized as a prominent Christian figure known for her unwavering faith and impact on monastic life. Hailing from a wealthy senatorial family, she was married to Toxotius and had six children. After becoming a widow at 32, she committed herself to a life of religious devotion and asceticism. Paula played a vital role in the Latin translation of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew, working closely with Saint Jerome. Together with her daughter Eustochium, she actively copied and disseminated these translations. She established important institutions, including a men’s monastery where Saint Jerome resided, a women’s convent she led as abbess, and a hospital for pilgrims. Honored as the Patron Saint of Widows, her memorial feast day is celebrated on January 26th.
