St. Augustine of Canterbury (d. 604), a Benedictine monk, was sent by Pope Gregory the Great in 596 to convert the Anglo-Saxons. Arriving in Kent in 597, he was welcomed by King Æthelberht, established a monastery in Canterbury, and became its first archbishop. He baptized many, spreading Christianity in southern England. His feast day is May 26.
