The Last Supper

The Last Supper is the sacred final meal Jesus shared with His twelve Apostles in the Upper Room on the night before His Passion and Death. This profound event is both a farewell and a divine gift: Jesus institutes the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and establishes the priesthood.

Institution of the Eucharist:
“And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ And likewise the chalice after they had eaten, saying, ‘This chalice which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.’” (Luke 22:19-20)
The New Covenant:
“For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:28)
Jesus transforms the Passover meal into the eternal sacrifice of the New Covenant.
Service and Humility:
Before the meal, Jesus washed the feet of the Apostles, saying:
“If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14)
Love and Unity:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” (John 13:34)
Memorial and Sacrifice:
“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the chalice, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26)
