Saint Paul the Hermit
Saint Paul the Hermit, also called Paul of Thebes, is honored as the first Christian hermit, who lived nearly a century in solitude in the Egyptian desert. Born around 227 AD in Egypt’s Thebaid region and passing around 341 AD, his life profoundly influenced Christian monasticism. Surviving on minimal food and aided by a raven that brought him bread, he devoted himself to prayer and penance in isolation. Around 342 AD, St. Anthony the Great visited him after a revelatory dream, spending a day and night together, a pivotal event in monastic history. Canonized in 491 AD by Pope Gelasius I, his feast day is observed on January 15 (Eastern Orthodox) and January 10 (Catholic). The Monastery of Saint Paul the Anchorite in Egypt is believed to contain his cave and relics.
