Our Lady of the Assumption, also known as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is honored as the patron saint of Asuncion, France, and Lebanon. This doctrine affirms that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. The feast of the Assumption, celebrated annually on August 15, is recognized by the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, the Church of the East, as well as various Lutheran and Anglican communities. Rooted in early Christian tradition from the third and fourth centuries, it was formally defined as dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950 through the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus. In Eastern Christianity, this event is referred to as the Dormition of the Mother of God, symbolizing her peaceful "falling asleep."
